US Chamber Of Commerce Tells Congress To Allow More Immigrants, Protect 'Dreamers'

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th January, 2019) The House of Representatives should broaden its approach to border security by allowing more foreign workers to legally enter the United States and also allow illegal aliens brought to the country as children - known as "dreamers" - to remain, according to a letter to members of Congress by US Chamber of Commerce Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley.

The letter also took aim at a Trump administration decision to end Temporary Protected Status previously extended to immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua and Sudan, to help provide remittances to support families following earthquakes and other natural disasters.

"Approximately 690,000 DACA [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival] recipients will see their work authorization revoked if Congress fails to provide relief to Dreamers," the letter stated on Tuesday. "In addition, approximately 310,540 current Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients will lose their work authorization as a result of recent administration decisions. Many of these individuals have legally lived and worked in the US for two decades."

The letter warned that without congressional action, more than one million individuals would lose their legal ability to work in the United States at a time when the number of US job openings exceeds the number of unemployed individuals.

The letter made no mention of a dispute over a border wall sought by President Donald Trump, which has resulted in a partial shutdown of the US Federal government for nearly three weeks.

Instead, the letter argued that the United States needs more, not fewer immigrants to supply labor for US businesses and urged lawmakers to reject proposals that will significantly reduce future legal migration to the United States.
