UN Human Rights Expert on North Korea to Start Visit to South Korea on January 7 - OHCHR

UN Special Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana will pay a visit to South Korea on January 7-11 in order to gather data on the current situation with human rights in North Korea, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd January, 2019) UN Special Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana will pay a visit to South Korea on January 7-11 in order to gather data on the current situation with human rights in North Korea, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said on Wednesday.

"A UN expert on human rights in North Korea will visit the South Korean capital Seoul from 7 to 11 January ... Despite repeated requests for a country visit, the DPRK has not granted the UN expert access to the country," the OHCHR said in a statement.

As Ojea Quintana has been repeatedly denied a visit by Pyongyang, he will meet with the South Korean leadership and diplomats as well as with members of civil society during the trip to Seoul, according to the statement.

"He [the UN expert] will also interview people who have recently escaped the DPRK [the Democratic People's Republic of Korea] and collect information on the current human rights situation inside the country," the OHCHR added.

The long-standing tensions on the Korean Peninsula started to ease after North Korea expressed its willingness to denuclearize and held summits with the South Korean and US presidents.
