US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Senator-Elect Mitt Romney to be a "team player" after the former Republican presidential nominee penned a scathing opinion article on Trump's character and leadership.

The president appeared to be referring to Senator Jeff Flake, a Republican from Arizona who strongly criticized Trump while in office and lost his party's support as a result. Flake is now retiring from the Senate after .
In Romney's opinion article, which was published by the Washington Post on Tuesday, the incoming senator criticized Trump's character and lack of presidential leadership.
Romney said that as a senator, he would support policies of the Trump administration that he agrees with, but would "speak out against significant statements or actions that are divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions."
Romney ran as the Republican presidential nominee against President Barack Obama in 2012, and on Thursday, will be sworn in as the US Senator from Utah.
