Russia's International Space Station (ISS) Segment Most Likely to Have No Greenhouse After Loss of Lada-2 - Scientists

The Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS) will most likely not get a new greenhouse to replace the Lada-2, which was destroyed in the Progress MS-04 cargo spaceship crash, the deputy director for scientific work at Moscow-based Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBMP RAS) said on Saturday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th December, 2018) The Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS) will most likely not get a new greenhouse to replace the Lada-2, which was destroyed in the Progress MS-04 cargo spaceship crash, the deputy director for scientific work at Moscow-based Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian academy of Sciences (IBMP RAS) said on Saturday.

"It will take at least five years, or even more to develop a new greenhouse. Therefore, there is no point to build a greenhouse for the ISS, because it may be ready only when the station ceases to exist," Vladimir Sychov told reporters.

At the same time, Sychov recalled that the Rocket and Space Corporation Energia was currently developing another space greenhouse that could be used to grow lettuce and carrots.

The Lada-2 greenhouse was destroyed in the Progress MS-04 spacecraft accident on December 1, 2016. Afterward, the IBMP RAS reported that it cost about $500 million to create.

The operational lifetime of the ISS reaches its end in 2024, but the participating countries are now considering the possibility of extending it until 2028.
