Red Cross Says Handed Over 3,000 Tonnes of Humanitarian Aid to LPR Residents in 2018

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delivered over 3,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the residents of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) in 2018, which has been engaged in an armed conflict with Kiev for over four years, the committee's press service told Sputnik.

LUHANSK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th December, 2018) The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delivered over 3,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the residents of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) in 2018, which has been engaged in an armed conflict with Kiev for over four years, the committee's press service told Sputnik.

"In 2018, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Lugansk distributed more than 3 thousand tons of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable categories of the population," the press service said in a statement.

According to the press service, more than 124,000 people have received individual food sets and hygiene kits this year. The humanitarian organization also handed over over 8 tonnes of medical supplies and 4,500 tonnes of materials to insulate buildings damaged during the conflict.

"In addition, the ICRC office in Lugansk has built 11 houses destroyed during the conflict this year and provided furniture, household appliances and household supplies for these households," the statement added.

The armed conflict in the east of Ukraine was triggered in 2014, after the LPR and another breakaway region, the Donetsk People's Republic, announced their independence from Ukraine, refusing to recognize the new government, which seized power after the overthrow of then-President Viktor Yanukovych.

Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany have been seeking to settle the conflict via their multilateral talks. In 2015, the group signed the Minsk ceasefire agreements; however, both Kiev and Donbas continue to accuse each other of truce breaches.
