Catalonia Seeks International Mediation in Talks With Spain - Region's Prime Minister

Head of the Catalan government Quim Torra said on Tuesday he had submitted to the Spanish government a package of measures aimed at reconciliation of tensions in relations between Barcelona and Madrid, which includes a resort to international mediation.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th December, 2018) Head of the Catalan government Quim Torra said on Tuesday he had submitted to the Spanish government a package of measures aimed at reconciliation of tensions in relations between Barcelona and Madrid, which includes a resort to international mediation.

Torra held talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Thursday but the details of the proposed package of measures had been announced only on Tuesday.

According to Torra, the package of measures includes "implementation of the [Catalan] self-determination right, including creation of an international commission, which will be a mediator between the governments of Catalonia and Spain."

He also pointed out that Catalonia would not support the 2019 draft budget if its initiatives were rejected.

On October 1, 2017, Catalonia held an independence referendum, which resulted in over 90 percent of those who voted backing the region's session. Madrid objected to the referendum and refused to recognize its results. On October 27 that same year, the Catalan parliament declared independence, which prompted the Spanish government to dismiss the regional government and impose direct rule over Catalonia.
