The Chinese foreign ministry's spokesperson on Monday expressed grief over the loss of the life and damage caused by a tsunami in Indonesia and said it would provide assistance through Red Cross.
"Indonesia is a friendly neighbour of China and the big casualties caused by the tsunami as a matter of concerns for China," Hua Chunying said during his regular briefing held here.
President Xi Jinping had already sent a message to Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressing condolences to the bereaved families and injured, she added.
The spokesperson believed the Indonesian people could rise above this disaster and return to normal life as soon as possible.
China would provide assistance through Red Cross and help them rise above this difficult time, she added.
On Saturday, giant waves crashed into coastal towns on the islands of Sumatra and Java, killing at least 281 people and injuring 1,016.
It is believed that volcanic activity set off undersea landslides which in turn generated the killer waves.
