De Mistura Says 'Extra Mile to Go' in Securing Balanced Syria Constitutional Committee

A great deal of effort has to be put in order to achieve formation of a balanced and inclusive Syrian constitutional committee, a statement on behalf of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Tuesday.

GENEVA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th December, 2018) A great deal of effort has to be put in order to achieve formation of a balanced and inclusive Syrian constitutional committee, a statement on behalf of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the UN envoy held meetings with the foreign ministers of guarantor states of the ceasefire regime in Syria - Russia, Iran and Turkey.

"The Special Envoy, in close consultation with the [UN] Secretary-General [Antonio Guterres], believes that there is an extra mile to go in the marathon effort to ensure the necessary package for a credible, balanced and inclusive constitutional committee - and for including a balanced chairing arrangement and drafting body and voting threshold - to be established under UN auspices in Geneva," the statement read.

The UN envoy went on to commend the contribution of the guarantor states to the formation of the committee.

"The three Foreign Ministers offered the Special Envoy a significant joint input regarding the constitutional committee," the statement added.

The consultations on the Constitutional Committee with Guterres and the UN Security Council will be held on December 20, according to the envoy.

"The Special Envoy will further consult with the Secretary-General in New York and brief the Security Council on 20 December 2018," the statement read.
