UK Media Lost Reputation Sending Audience in Search of Alternatives - Russian Embassy

British media has seriously damaged its reputation due to which many readers and viewers switched to alternative media, including RT, a spokesperson for the Russian Embassy in London said Tuesday.

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th December, 2018) British media has seriously damaged its reputation due to which many readers and viewers switched to alternative media, including RT, a spokesperson for the Russian Embassy in London said Tuesday.

On Sunday, BBC Russia correspondent Olga Ivshina admitted that the broadcaster was in the search of any proof of Moscow's alleged masterminding of the ongoing French rallies, and demanded that its journalists seek any leads that would point to Russia. Ivshina talked about this in correspondence with a Russian correspondent, who covers the rallies from the French capital, in a bid to find out whether Moscow had anything to do with the events.

"It could not be said that the BBC somehow distinguished itself in this sense. Unfortunately, many representatives of the British media began to adjust the facts to the editorial policy, distort the informational picture in favor of the desired version ... We are obliged to note that British media, once rightly considered to be one of the most independent, have seriously damaged their reputation. It is not surprising that many readers switched to other sources of information such as online media, social networks or alternative media such as RT," the embassy's spokesperson said.

The spokesman recalled that British media journalists, including those covering the Skripal case, used to avoid uncomfortable questions that would contradict the official version of London about what had happened. Before the incident in Salisbury, the British media also covered events in East Aleppo in a biased manner, the embassy representative said.

"Indeed, it is noteworthy, when instead of independent journalistic work in the interests of objectivity, employees must obtain information at any cost to support the interpretation of events dictated from above. As the saying goes, if the facts do not comply with editorial policy, so much the worse for the facts. An assessment of BBC behavior ... should be given by the British public and regulatory authorities. This should also be interesting for the relevant structures of the OSCE [Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe]," the spokesperson added.

On December 16, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged the UK public to assess the activities of the BBC broadcaster, which had always been "advocating for an unbiased and independent approach," while in reality seeking at any cost to find any "proof" of Moscow's alleged role in the "yellow vest" protests, and was effectively engaged in producing fake news.
