Police are carrying out searches in several facilities in Berlin, including a mosque, whose imam is suspected of financing terrorism, the public prosecution of Berlin said on Tuesday.
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th December, 2018) Police are carrying out searches in several facilities in Berlin, including a mosque, whose imam is suspected of financing terrorism, the public prosecution of Berlin said on Tuesday.
"Since early morning, as part of the investigation of the Berlin public prosecution, police carried out searches in several facilities, including the As-Sahaba Mosque in Berlin's Wedding District over [suspected] financing terrorism," the prosecution said on its Twitter page.
The mosque's imam is suspected of financing activities of a terror group in Syria.
"Ahmad A., 45, known as Abul Baraa, who serves as imam, is suspected of sending money to a jihadist militant in Syria so that the latter could buy weapons to commit terrorist crimes," the public prosecution added.
According to the Bild newspaper, the mosque was monitored by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as it was known as a place of assembly for radical Salafists. The facility was particularly attended by Anis Amri, perpetrator of the truck ramming attack in Berlin in 2016.
