UK to Spend Extra $1.2 Billion on 75 Healthcare Projects After Brexit - Minister

An extra 963 million pounds ($1.2 billion) in funds that will be freed up after UK's exit from the European Union will go to the National Health Service (NHS), the health minister said.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th December, 2018) An extra 963 million Pounds ($1.2 billion) in funds that will be freed up after UK's exit from the European Union will go to the National Health Service (NHS), the health minister said.

"We want even more patients to receive world-class care in world-class NHS facilities and this near billion-pound boost ... means that the NHS can do just that for years to come," Matt Hancock was quoted as saying in a government statement.

A total of 75 projects in England will receive funding to upgrade their facilities. Most of that money - up to 800 million pounds - will be spent on projects outside London.

"Stopping sending money to the EU after EU Exit means we can invest more in domestic priorities including our NHS," the statement reads.

The NHS has been struggling to cope with a rising demand, which has stretched to the limit its budget and staff. The numbers of doctors and nurses are projected to fall further after rules for EU migrants seeking jobs in the country become tougher past March 2019.
