Global Greens Highlight Urgency of UN Climate Report Implementation

There is a need to act urgently with regard to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that has not been reflected in the actions of governments so far, Elizabeth May, the leader of the Canadian Green Party, said on Friday on behalf of the Global Greens.

KATOWICE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th December, 2018) There is a need to act urgently with regard to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that has not been reflected in the actions of governments so far, Elizabeth May, the leader of the Canadian Green Party, said on Friday on behalf of the Global Greens.

"The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gave the world and policy makers a clear warning. We are running out of time that the Paris targets so far filed with the UNFCCC [United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change] as NDCs [Nationally determined contributions] fall far short of what is needed and unlike many in governments around the world who seem to feel we have time, Greens recognize we don't have time for delay we need to [step] it up now," May said during a press conference at COP24.

The inclusion of IPCC report findings remains a controversial point at Katowice, and May added that negotiations at COP24 were likely to continue past the end of the day, since many more issues remained unresolved.

The report in question, released in October, warned that the world had to take urgent action to keep the global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), stressing that it would help decrease risks of droughts, floods and other extreme weather conditions.
