Sub-standard Cooking Oil Poses Health Hazard In Rawalpindi

Due to apathy of the District Health Authorities, the sale of unhygienic edibles cooked in used frying oil and ghee is going on unchecked thereby putting the people's health at risk.
Most of the vendors fry edibles in used oil and do not change it despite using it for many days. It is observed that many vendors and shopkeepers mix new oil in already used oil, which is a very dangerous practice.
Moreover, some renowned restaurants have also been found using the same cooking oil for more than eight days in their fryers and are causing various diseases. Most of the people in this business do not adopt any measure to maintain the quality of oil as well as to increase the useful life of frying oils.
Shouket Ghani, a resident of Rawalpindi, told APP that he observed many vendors mixing fresh cooking oil with used oil in the fryer, which is even more hazardous to human health. Also, most of these items on the roadside are left uncovered.
Consumers have demanded the authorities concerned to check this practice and monitor the unhygienic conditions in which fried items are being prepared, but they are yet to take notice.
When Contacted, the the officials of Punjab Food Authority (PFA) said that the food Inspectors are conducting surprise visits of different markets to check quality of food items at food outlets, adding thatthe teams also imposed fines on the stall holders and vendors for unhygienic food and poor cleanliness condition.
