Allama Iqbal Open University Develops Research-based Botanical Garden

A botanical garden has been formally set up in Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) to work as research-lab for the students of horticulture sector.
"We are planning to plant soon around 100 medicinal saplings in the garden that will meet wide-ranging needs of academic research, said the Head of the University's Horticulture section Fozia Anjum on Thursday.The botanical garden is a part of Green House that is maintained by the University's gardeners on regular basis. We are making it an exemplary one in line with concept of Green Pakistan, keeping in view the guideline of the Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Zia-Ul-Qayyum, she added.The Green House also augments beauty and research environment of the University, she told.
She said that the botanical garden will have documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education. The University, she said, has the distinction of running various academic courses relating to horticulture development, adding that such research-based garden was the dire need of the students.
"We have also been providing the required training to the University's gardeners for further development of their gardening skill, she said.
This enabled our gardeners to win special awards in the flower display shows that occasionally take place in the Federal Capital, she added.
