Speakers stress to revise education syllabus as per industry's demand

Speakers at a seminar on "Academia-Industry Linkage" here Thursday stressed the need to revise the entire education syllabus, saying, the curriculum being taught at universities was not linked with the industry's demand.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 13th Dec, 2018 ) :Speakers at a seminar on "Academia-Industry Linkage" here Thursday stressed the need to revise the entire education syllabus, saying, the curriculum being taught at universities was not linked with the industry's demand. They underlined the need to revise the curriculum as per international standards and demand. The speakers were agreed that students should go for self employment in future as Pakistan's future was lying in the establishment of small business.

The speakers urged the students to think about the establishment of entrepreneurship within the country as well as abroad as the huge number of educated youth could not be accommodated in local job market.

The speakers also underlined the need to formulate some standards and policies in education sector so that the students could be trained in industry sector.

The speakers including Vice Chancellor Gomal University Dr Muhammad Sarwar, Vice Chancellor Muslim Youth University Dr Tahir Hijazi, Seniour Advisor Public Policy Telenor Shah ul Haq and Chief Human Resource mobilink Bank Samiha Ali addressed the seminar.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Tahir Hijazi said Pakistan had adopted US education system which is not relevant and beneficial for our market needs. The industry sector, he said, was not ready to take students for jobs and the universities do not release them for practical work in the fields.

He said that the students of developed countries were thinking about the establishment of business during and after completion of their education but unfortunately here in Pakistan the students think only about the jobs.

Dr Samiha Ali in her remarks said that the degrees were still preferred in country's job market therefore the students were preferring to get higher degrees and not inclined to achieve skilled based education to own their own businesses.

She further said Mobilink was providing small loans to the students to start their business but they should come up with a solid plan to execute for their success.

Dr Muhammad Sarwar said that an Industry-academia linkage was pivotal as it was the only solution for the economic development of the country.

The industry, he said, only prefers skilled professionals. The teachers must stress the students for research work and provide them opportunities of internship.

Shah ul Haq said that the basic aim behind the subject of computer science being taught in the universities was to promote entrepreneurship. More than one million jobs can be created only in IT sector by proper utilization of funds, he added.

The seminar was held on second day of International Students Convention organized by Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan (IUCPSS) in collaboration with COMSATS, Paigham-e-Pakistan, Punjab Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Studies United Nations Information Center and other top ranked Pakistani universities.
