Russian Upper House Leader Says Chamber Has Sufficient Powers Under Constitution

The Russian constitution guarantees "enough" powers to the upper house, parliamentary speaker Valentina Matvienko told Sputnik on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) The Russian constitution guarantees "enough" powers to the upper house, parliamentary speaker Valentina Matvienko told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"As for the Federation Council's role in the state politics, I think it is in line with the Constitution, which defines the powers granted to our chamber, including the legislative, the representative and the oversight components of our work. The Council has enough authority," she said.

The upper house has been increasingly engaged with other national parliaments amid attempts from abroad to isolate and discredit Russia, she added.

Russia marks 25 years since the adoption of its constitution this month. A heated debate was sparked off in October over whether the basic law should be changed to fine-tune the balance of powers.
