Russia Offers to Hold Conference on Persian Gulf Security - UN Envoy

Russia has proposed to hold a conference on the security issues in the Persian Gulf with the participation of the regional powers, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) Russia has proposed to hold a conference on the security issues in the Persian Gulf with the participation of the regional powers, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

"What remains topical is our concept of strengthening security in the Persian Gulf under international guarantees and this could start by holding a conference with the participation of countries of the region," Nebenzia said. "This could then be broadened to other middle Eastern countries."

Nebenzia stressed the key moment of the UN Security Council work in the Middle East region should be creating conditions that could lead to improving the atmosphere of trust between Arab states, Israel and Iran.

"Let me recall that already in the resolution 598 of 1988 the Security Council requested the Secretary General to work out together with regional actors on the ways of increasing security and stability in the region," he said. "This is not an easy issue, but work needs to begin in this area and we stand ready to what we can through contacts with our regional partners."

"The ultimate goal should be creating such an architecture of regional security which would be truly inclusive in nature and provide for including all of the states in that part of world," Nebenzya added.

The envoy pointed out that Russia is ready to work together on security in the Persian Gulf region with all interested parties on the basis of open and impartial dialogue "without any threats or negative pressure."
