UK Public Sees No Strong Contender to Replace May Ahead of Confidence Vote - Poll

UK voters think that none of Theresa May's potential challengers to lead UK's ruling Conservative Party are more likely to make a good prime minister than a bad one, a poll released Wednesday found.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) UK voters think that none of Theresa May's potential challengers to lead UK's ruling Conservative Party are more likely to make a good prime minister than a bad one, a poll released Wednesday found.

A vote of no confidence in May is scheduled for this evening. She will need a clear majority of Tory votes to stay in power and govern the nation through the Brexit process.

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson came on top, according to the YouGov poll, with 22 percent saying he would do well, while 57 percent said he would make a bad prime minister.

Ex-Brexit Secretary David Davis and Home Secretary Sajid Javid each have support of 15 percent, while respectively 34 percent and 33 percent of respondents have a bad opinion of them.

The former interior minister and current chief for work and pensions, Amber Rudd, is supported by 14 percent, with 37 saying she would make a bad prime minister.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab each scored 11 percentage points or less among the British public, while at least a quarter of respondents said they did not know them well enough.

Asked whether either of the potential challengers could deliver a better deal with the European Union on the terms of Brexit, 20 percent put their trust in Boris Johnson. One in eight said they felt David Davis could do a better job, but less than one in 10 said any of the others could.
