BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) The European Parliament on Wednesday handed the 2018 Sakharov prize over to the representatives of Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, jailed in Russia for plotting terrorist attacks.

Sentsov's cousin Natalya Kaplan and his lawyer Dmitriy Dinze represented the film director at a ceremony in Strasbourg.

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named in honor of Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov, was established in 1988 to honor individuals and organizations defending fundamental freedoms and human rights.

In 2015, a Russian court sentenced Sentsov to 20 years in prison. In 2014, he was arrested in Simferopol among the members of a terrorist cell called Right Sector (banned in Russia), who were plotting terrorist attacks in the Crimean cities of Yalta, Simferopol and Sevastopol. The Ukrainian filmmaker has denied his guilt.
