Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmud on Wednesday said that membership of Parliament should not be used as shield to conceal corruption.
Responding to a point of order raised by former Premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the minister said that Parliament is the supreme institution having great dignity. However, he said that membership of Parliament should not be used as shield to conceal corruption.
He welcomed the idea of starting accountability of all politicians from 1980 and said that the easiest way was to look into their details of tax returns and Statements of Assets and Liabilities.
The minister said that all accountability mechanisms were introduced in the previous tenures and NAB laws were not reviewed by the former governments.
It is unfair to allege the incumbent governments of registering cases against the Opposition leaders as all of these cases were registered in previous tenures, he maintained.
He said that a resolution should be adopted unanimously by this August House not to spare anyone who embezzled in the national kitty.
The minister said that previous government left poor economy as there had been circular debt of Rs. 1200 billion and foreign debt of 95 billion Dollars.
It is on the record that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave tax of Rs. 534 in 1992, theminister said adding that all politicians should be made accountable and to be askedabout their assets before coming into politics.
