US House Passes Resolution Opposing Nord Stream 2, Calling For Anti-Russian Sanctions

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution that expresses opposition to completing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project that would bring Russian gas to the European Union through the Baltic Sea bypassing Ukraine.

"H. Res. 1035 [the pipeline resolution] passed by voice," the Republican cloakroom of the House of Representatives said in a Twitter message.

The House supports the imposition of sanctions in connection with the Russian pipeline project under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), according to the resolution.

US congressmen call on European governments to reject the pipeline and ask the US president to use all means available to support European energy security, the resolution said.

The Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture of Russia's Gazprom with France's Engie, Austria's OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and Germany's Uniper and Wintershall. It aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters (some 2 trillion cubic feet) of Russian natural gas per year to the European Union.

The pipeline project has been welcomed by some countries in Europe and opposed by a number of others, including Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic States, while the United States has also expressed its opposition.
