Czech Republic 'on Track' to Reach Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cut Target - Minister

The Czech Republic is successfully moving forward to the targeted decrease of its greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades, the country's Environment Minister Richard Brabec said Tuesday.

KATOWICE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The Czech Republic is successfully moving forward to the targeted decrease of its greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades, the country's Environment Minister Richard Brabec said Tuesday.

"The Czech Republic is currently well on track to fulfill its commitments under the convention of the Kyoto protocol and Paris agreement. Our greenhouse gas emissions were 35 percent below the 1990 levels in 2017 and are projected to decrease over the next decades," Brabec said at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24).

The talks in Poland's Katowice are focused on finalizing the guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The negotiations have proven difficult as parties to the agreement have different views on many issues, including the adoption of the recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Kuwait, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States insisted that it should be noted rather than fully endorsed.

The study showed that keeping the increase in average global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) rather than 2 degrees set out in the Paris deal as the upper limit would help avoid many weather disasters.

"We welcome this report as the Czech Republic and at the same time it's a pity that not all parties share this view here in Katowice," Brabec said.

The Czech minister added that he believed that "a reasonable compromise on the Paris Agreement work program that will be acceptable to all parties" was possible despite the existing difficulties.
