Katowice Climate Talks Can Prove Effectiveness of Multilateralism - Polish Minister

The negotiations on the practical guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, ongoing in Poland's Katowice, could prove that multilateralism is an effective tool, Polish Environment Minister Henryk Kowalczyk said Tuesday.

KATOWICE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The negotiations on the practical guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, ongoing in Poland's Katowice, could prove that multilateralism is an effective tool, Polish Environment Minister Henryk Kowalczyk said Tuesday.

"We must make sure that mechanisms and institutions are put in place to implement the Paris agreement and this is why we came here. This is the result that the world expects from these almost two weeks of our work. It is an extremely important test of multilateralism. It's a chance of showing that multilateral talks and listening carefully to our partners is the only successful method in meeting the goals defined in 2015," Kowalczyk said.

The minister stressed that the negotiators at the 24th Conference of the Parties to the convention Change (COP24). had worked hard.

"I believe consequently we will be able to reach this consensus ... The world needs the Katowice rule book to effectively curb the temperature rises and to build a climate neutral world in line with the visions involved in the Paris agreement," Kowalczyk said.

The Paris climate deal, which went into force in 2016, aims to keep the increase in average global temperature at below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). It has been ratified by 184 of the 197 parties to the accord.
