Russian Court Sentences Former Naval Officer to 14 Years in Prison for Spying for Ukraine

A court in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don sentenced on Tuesday former naval officer Leonid Parkhomenko to 14 years in jail for leaking information on Russia's Black Sea Fleet to Ukraine, considered an act of treason, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

ROSTOV-ON-DON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) - A court in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don sentenced on Tuesday former naval officer Leonid Parkhomenko to 14 years in jail for leaking information on Russia's Black Sea Fleet to Ukraine, considered an act of treason, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

"[The court decided] to sentence Parkhomenko to 14 years in a strict regime penal colony," the judge said.

The court also deprived Parkhomenko of the military grade of captain.

During the court hearing, the prosecutor demanded a 15-year sentence for Parkhomenko, while his lawyer asked the court to acquit the former officer.

Parkhomenko was detained on November 22, 2016 in the Crimean city of Sevastopol. According to prosecutors, he gathered information about Russia's Black Sea Fleet between December 2003 and December 2005 for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

The former officer has refuted the accusations.
