Balochistan government has planned to build fishing business venue on the coastal line of the province to boost the sector by providing access to the national and international markets.
Talking to APP, an official of the fisheries Balochistan department said that the province has the capacity to produce good quality fish and provide access to the global market.
He said the construction of fishing venue has been enforced on the directives of the Chief Minister of Balochistan to boost the untapped sector and provide facilities to the local fishermen.
The government would bring improvements in the fisheries department, as the interested entrepreneurs and investors could promote farming in the province purely on commercial basis, he added.
A local fisherman, Allah Bachaya said that the fishermen in Balochistan were facing numerous problems, adding they still follow the old and obsolete methods of fishing which further spoils the situation.
He said, "The lack of infrastructure facilities keep fishermen deprived from the outcome of the catches made and there seems no improvement in their socio- economic conditions." He said due to no availability of the latest fishing technologies and equipment local fishermen were using small vessels to earn merely Rs12,000 to Rs15,000 in more than three weeks, adding that they still follow the old methods of fishing which creates hurdles to catch fish in deep waters.
He said there is need to rehabilitate the local fishermen and improve their working conditions. He urged that the government should take steps on priority basis to introduce new technologies and give training to the local fishermen for fishing on modern lines.
He regretted that it seemed clear as the fisheries department had no interest in our concerns either our livelihood or lives were under threat.
