Turkey in Talks With UN on Possible International Probe Into Khashoggi Murder - Ankara

Ankara is discussing with the United Nations the possibility of launching an international investigation into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday.

ANKARA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) Ankara is discussing with the United Nations the possibility of launching an international investigation into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday.

In November, Cavusoglu stressed the need to launch an international investigation into the journalist's death, saying that it was essential.

"We share new information [in Khashoggi case] with everyone, including Saudi Arabia. We wanted to work with them from the very beginning but, unfortunately, at the moment, we do not see the same wish on their part ... The body [of the journalist] has still not been found, and an accomplice [to the murder] is unknown. We started receiving requests from the global community on the launch of an international inquiry. We are in talks with the United Nations on this matter," Cavusoglu told reporters.

Khashoggi, known for his criticism of Saudi policies, went missing after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey's Istanbul on October 2. After weeks of denials, the Saudi chief prosecutor admitted that the US-based columnist had been killed inside the diplomatic mission. Istanbul prosecutors said on October 31 that Khashoggi had been strangled in a premeditated murder after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate, and his body was subsequently dismembered and destroyed.
