EU Parliament's Committee Urges Bloc to Stop Discriminating Against African Descent People

The European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee adopted a resolution on Monday, urging all EU member states to put an end to discrimination against people of African descent and develop policies to address the problem, the parliamentarians' press release revealed on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee adopted a resolution on Monday, urging all EU member states to put an end to discrimination against people of African descent and develop policies to address the problem, the parliamentarians' press release revealed on Tuesday.

"The Civil Liberties Committee denounces structural racism against Afro-European people and calls on the EU and its member states for measures to tackle it. The EU and the national authorities should develop anti-racism policies, covering the fields of education, housing, health, criminal justice, political participation and migration," the press release said.

According to the press release, the document was adopted by an overwhelming majority by 29 votes to 1, with 1 abstention.

The committee members called on the European Commission to reserve funding in the European Union's budget for the years between 2021 and 2027 to tackle the issue.

The lawmakers stressed that people of African descent were increasingly vulnerable to violence while in police custody, and urged EU members to put an end to racial profiling when it comes to counterterrorism activities and immigration.

The Civil Liberties Committee also believes that European states and the bloc's institutions should make reparation for the crimes committed against African descent people during the colonial period by publicly apologizing and returning artefacts, stolen from African countries.

According to the European Parliament, around 15 million people of African descent currently live in European countries.
