German Education Minister Notes Importance of Dialogue With Russia During Difficult Times

It is very important to maintain Russian-German dialogue when the two countries face tensions in bilateral relations, German Federal Minister of Education and Research Anja Karliczek told journalists on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th December, 2018) It is very important to maintain Russian-German dialogue when the two countries face tensions in bilateral relations, German Federal Minister of Education and Research Anja Karliczek told journalists on Monday.

"Dialogue is crucial. Dialogue unites science and international relations. Education and science enormously contribute to the mutual understanding of nations and international cooperation. It is very important to maintain dialogue and, of course, this is especially relevant during difficult times and time of challenges that Russian-German relations face," Karliczek said.

The minister also stressed that the new road map signed between the two states had brought the bilateral cooperation and interaction to a new level. For the first time, a 10-year strategy was signed, she added.

Earlier in the day, Russia and Germany signed a road map for cooperation in education and science following relevant negotiations. The document was signed by Karliczek and Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Mikhail Kotyukov. Russian Deputy Prime Minister for Social Policy Tatyana Golikova also took part in the negotiations.

Relations between Moscow and Berlin deteriorated in 2014 after Crimea's reunification with Russia and amid the crisis in eastern Ukraine. The European Union imposed restrictive measures on Russia, while Moscow responded by imposing restrictions on food imports from the countries that supported the sanctions.

The recent incident in the Kerch Strait between Russia and Ukraine, when three Ukrainian ships were detained after illegally crossing Russian border, has contributed to further deterioration of Moscow-Berlin relations.
