The United States has designated former leader of The Gambia over corruption, the State Department said in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th December, 2018) The United States has designated former leader of The Gambia over corruption, the State Department said in a press release on Monday.

"The Department is publicly designating former president of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh... due to his involvement in significant corruption," the release said.

The State Department said it is also publicly designating Jammeh's spouse, daughter and son as required by US law. As a result of the designation, the release added, the former Gambian leader and his family are now banned from entering the United States.

On December 1, 2016, Adama Barrow won the presidential election in Gambia but Jammeh rejected the outcome of the vote and declared a state of emergency, claiming that the country faced foreign interference. The country's parliament extended his term for 3 months.

On January 19, 2017, Barrow was sworn in as President at Gambia's embassy in Senegal. Late on the same day, Senegal announced the beginning of a military intervention in Gambia. On January 21, Jammeh announced his decision to step down.
