Social Media Outpaces US Print Newspapers as News Source For First Time Ever - Poll

Social media sites have surpassed print newspapers as a source of news for most Americans for the first time, a survey published PEW Research Center showed on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th December, 2018) Social media sites have surpassed print newspapers as a source of news for most Americans for the first time, a survey published PEW Research Center showed on Monday.

"One-in-five US adults say they often get news via social media, slightly higher than the share who often do so from print newspapers (16%) for the first time since Pew Research Center began asking these questions," Pew said in a summary of the survey's results. "In 2017, the portion who got news via social media was about equal to the portion who got news from print newspapers."

Overall, television is still the most popular platform for news consumption - even though its use has declined since 2016, the release said. News websites are the next most common source, followed by radio, and finally social media sites and print newspapers, the release said.

The survey revealed a strong correlation between age and preferred news sources, with younger Americans more likely to use social media as a news source than older viewers, the release added.

The popularity of print newspapers persisted only among those 65 and older, with about four-in-ten (39 percent) using printed broadsheets or tabloids while no more than 18 percent of any other age group doing likewise, according to the release.
