Grooms required undergoing Thalassemia test before marriage

On average 17 children are born with Thalassemia in Pakistan.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 8th December, 2018) The grooms are required to conduct their Thalassemia test before marriage.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid while addressing the National Thalassemia Conference said that on average 17 children are born with Thalassemia in Pakistan.

She said that avoiding cousin marriages and undergoing Thalassemia test before marriage can prevent the disease.

She added that the Prevention of Thalassemia Bill is also on the cards and will be presented in Punjab Assembly. The bill will require the grooms to undergo Thalassemia test before marriage.

The minister added that Fatima Jinnah Medical University is running the world’s largest Thalassemia programme.

She added that the threat rises when both husband and wife have Thalassemia genes.
