Former Ukrainian Prime Minister and leader of the Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) Party Yulia Tymoshenko, who intends to run in the country's 2019 presidential election, said on Friday that she had held a number of meetings during her trip to the United States with the aim of finding "new ways to support Ukraine.

The politician noted she had held talks with the president of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Derek Mitchell, about security policy and the political situation in Ukraine.
Tymoshenko added that at a meeting with Sen. Joe Manchin, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, she called for tougher sanctions against Russia and stressed the need to hold talks in the Budapest Plus format � between Russia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The Ukrainian lawmaker also expressed gratitude to two members of the Armed Forces Committee of the House of Representatives, Rick Larsen and Jim Cooper, for the "unanimous US position" on the events in Ukraine and US assistance provided to Ukrainian troops.
Ukraine will hold its presidential election on March 31, 2019. Tymoshenko has been leading in polls for several months. According to the polls released by Ukraine's Raiting sociological group on Monday, 17 percent of Ukrainians are ready to support Tymoshenko in the upcoming election, while incumbent President Petro Poroshenko enjoys support from only 10 percent of the country's population.
