Head of Germany's CDU to Be Chosen in Runoff Between Merz, Kramp-Karrenbauer - Party

The head of Germany's Christian Democratic Union, succeeding Chancellor Angela Merkel in this role, will be chosen in the runoff between Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Friedrich Merz, the party said Friday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) The head of Germany's Christian Democratic Union, succeeding Chancellor Angela Merkel in this role, will be chosen in the runoff between Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Friedrich Merz, the party said Friday.

The delegates of the CDU have gathered in Hamburg for a party conference where the vote for the new leader took place.

"Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has gotten 450 votes ... Friedrich Merz received 392 votes ... No candidate has received the required majority. Because of that, we will have a definitive vote between Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Friedrich Merz," a party member announced.

The third candidate, Jens Spahn, received 157 votes.

The required majority is 500 votes, according to the official.
