African Union Believes Joint Mission With UN in Darfur Can Be Shut by 2020 - Commissioner

Ongoing efforts in resolving outstanding issues in Sudan's Darfur and between Sudan and South Sudan can enable the African Union-United Nations joint mission in Darfur (UNAMID) to progressively close down by 2020, African Union's Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui, told Sputnik

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) Ongoing efforts in resolving outstanding issues in Sudan's Darfur and between Sudan and South Sudan can enable the African Union-United Nations joint mission in Darfur (UNAMID) to progressively close down by 2020, African Union's Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui, told Sputnik.

"Yes. I think with ongoing efforts, one could envisage the mission shut down within the framework of Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2020," Chergui said, when asked when the hybrid mission expects to withdraw its forces from the crisis-torn region in Sudan.

The Commissioner noted that the Jebel Marra region, where the UNAMID headquarters is located, would still remain an important area where minimum troops might be maintained.

The joint AU-UN mission was approved by the UN Security Council in 2007.
