Daily exercise, healthy environment , timely eating help cure insomnia : Dr. Riaz Ahmed

Talking to APP here on Friday, consultant Neuro and Spinal Surgeon, and Assistant professor of the department of the Neurosurgery of the Liaquat Universty of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, professor Dr.Riaz Ahmed Raja has said that sleepless problem or insomnia is a common condition that can last for a short period of time or for a long period of time.

He said that insomnia or sleep disorder, is physical and common psychological problems include anxiety, stress, and depression and many people will have insomnia during the acute phases of a mental illness.

He also said that some signs and symptoms of insomnia disturbed the person included problems falling asleep at night, frequently waking up during the night, waking up too early; feeling sleepy during the day easily irritated the person.

Dr.Raja said that person may sleep too much or not enough if he or she depressed and this is because of chemical imbalances in their brain or because of stress that's associated with depression. These may keep you from a restful night of sleep.

He said that the clinical practice of sleep medicine would play a crucial role in fatigue risk management. In short term, it improves performance, productivity and safety, while in longer term; it improves workers' health and well-being.

He said that change of environment or work schedule is very necessary. He further said eating too much and too late in the evening and consuming a small snack before bed is right but indulging on chocolate covered coffee or tea after eating a late dinner, is not good because eating too much too late may cause person feel uncomfortable and keep awake, informed Dr.Raja.

Dr.Riaz Ahmed Raja said that sleeping is a very important process for the human body functioning and lack or surplus of sleep can lead to different problems during the daytime activities and insomnia consequences can be really serious and harm person physical and mental health.

Dr.Raja said that the insomnia is not actually an illness but it is only a symptom of far more bigger problems and insomnia consequences can be very serious.

He said that such medical conditions as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and many others can lead to long term insomnia.

He said that as long as it is a complex problem there is no simple solution but the best way to do something with insomnia is exercise. In most cases of short term insomnia gym helps if performed on a regular basis.

He informed that very popular solution for insomnia is the use of sleeping pills but as recent studies show such pills provide short term remedy and can lead to even more serious sleep problems later and such pills should not be used for a long time, he added.

Dr.Riaz Ahmed Raja suggested that the good sleeping habits induce sleep including avoid caffeine and alcohol in any form, four to six hours before bed time, avoid nicotine near bedtime and upon awaking during night and avoid a heavy meal in the evening, added.

About the self care at home he suggested that Exercise regularly, avoid strenuous activity before bedtime, avoid large meals and excessive fluids before bedtime, control environment , light, noise, and elevated room temperature can disrupt sleep.

Dr.Riaz Ahmed Raja suggested that if person have chronic insomnia so he or she should also go easy on caffeine, high doses of caffeine can neutralize some of the sedating effects of valerian.

Dr.Raja said that the certain medications have been associated with insomnia and among them are certain over the counter cold and asthma preparations.

He said that medications for high blood pressure have also been associated with poor sleep but common stimulants associated with poor sleep include caffeine and nicotine.
