Sudan, Egypt Plan to Create Joint Monitoring Force at Libyan Border - Ambassador

Khartoum and Cairo intend to create a joint monitoring mission along the border with Libya to prevent arms and human trafficking through the conflict-hit country, Sudanese Ambassador to Russia Nadir Babiker told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) Khartoum and Cairo intend to create a joint monitoring mission along the border with Libya to prevent arms and human trafficking through the conflict-hit country, Sudanese Ambassador to Russia Nadir Babiker told Sputnik.

"There is a very good coordination with Egypt. We are planning a joint monitoring army, or joint monitoring force, to guard the border to stop the infiltration of terrorists, of people who are using this area for human trafficking ... Sometimes there is arms smuggling and terrorist movement. We need to make sure the Libyan border with the neighboring countries is being well monitored," Babiker said.

He also expressed hope that the efforts would contribute to settling the situation in Libya on the ground.

"When there is insecurity and there is no central government controlling the situation these things happen [human trafficking, violence]. We have also been affected because there is insecurity in the border between Sudan and Libya... I hope that very soon with recent agreement the Libyans themselves will settle this crisis. Libya is very important in Africa and the middle East, it plays a very important role economically and politically," the ambassador added.

Khartoum is actively involved in supporting peace process efforts in the neighboring country. Last week, it hosted the Libyan settlement talks, bringing together representatives of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), the United Nations, the Arab League, and the European Union.
