China, Portugal Sign 17 Agreements, Including On New Silk Road Initiative

MADRID (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th December, 2018) Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa at a meeting in Lisbon have signed 17 bilateral agreements, including on Portugal officially joining China's New Silk Road infrastructure initiative.

Xi is currently on a string of foreign visits to a number of Latin American and European states.

One of the bilateral agreements, signed at the leaders' meeting on Wednesday, added Portuguese port city of Sines to Beijing's project connecting Asia and Europe.

The Portuguese prime minister said at a press conference that a package of deals with Beijing would boost Chinese investment in Portugal.

China's Belt and Road strategy was first announced by the Chinese leader in 2013 and is aimed at developing infrastructure and strengthening ties between the Eurasian countries. The initiative focuses mainly on the Maritime Silk Route and on the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt.
