US Justice Dept. Awards $16Mln To Las Vegas Shooting Survivors - Acting Attorney General

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th November, 2018) Victims of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, will receive $16 million to help pay for rehabilitation, counseling, and legal aid, Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said in a speech in Ohio on Friday.

"Today, I am announcing that the Department of Justice will provide $16 million for the victims of last October's mass shooting in Las Vegas and for the first responders who came to the scene," Whitaker said. "These funds can be used to help pay for counseling, therapy, rehabilitation, trauma recovery, and legal aid."

In a press release following Whitaker's speech, the Justice Department said the actual total will be more than $16.7 million. The funding comes from the department's Antiterrorism and Emergency Assistance Program (AEAP).

In June, the US Department of Justice already provided $3 million following the mass shooting to compensate expenses for state and local law enforcement in Las Vegas and Clark County, the release said.

Last year, on October 1, a gunman opened fire on a crowd attending a concert at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. The shooter Stephen Paddock, who later was found dead with self-inflicted wounds, fired more than 1,100 rounds from his suite in the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel from the 32nd floor, killing 58 people and leaving more than 600 physically injured.
