Senate Body Visits Shakardara Oil Refinery, Obtains Briefing On Oil And Gas Production

The subcommittee of Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources on Tuesday was briefed about oil and gas production and welfare projects during its visit to Shakardara Oil Refinery here on Tuesday.
Convener of the committee Senator Shamim Afridi, member of the subcommittee Behramand Khan Tangi, Deputy Commissioner Karak and other officials of Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) were present on the occasion.
The committee was informed that work on Chanda Oil Refinery was started in 1999, work on Mela in 2006 and on Mol Refinery in 2010. Oil and Gas production has been started and the refinery is function 24/7.
Convener of the subcommittee said that oil and gas was being supplied from the Oil Refinery to other parts of the country and playing important key role in the uplift of the economy and important sectors like industry, agriculture etc. He said that oil and gas exploration companies had earned billion of rupees but did not take any significant steps for uplift of education, provision of healthcare and clean drinking water in northern districts.
He said that oil exploration company Mol and OGDCL should take steps to ensure drinking water to residence of these areas which is their basic right.
He said that two pending schemes of irrigation in district Karak should be completed at the earliest adding concerned authorities would be held accountable for delay in these schemes.
He sought report on violating job quota for local people both in technical and non-technical level in next meeting.
Shamim Afridi also expressed his dissatisfaction over supply of water to three union council of Shakardara through water tankers costing Rs.1.2 million per month. He stressed the need of evolving effective monitoring system to check any embezzlement in the scheme.
Speaking on the occasion, Senator Behramand stressed the need that exploration companies should focus on health and education sector besides taking steps for provision of clean drinking water in northern districts.
