German Court Sentences Borussia Dortmund Bus Attacker to 14 Years in Jail - Reports

A German court sentenced Sergei V., suspected of committing an attack on the Borussia Dortmund football club bus in 2017, to 14 years in prison, the DPA news agency reported Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th November, 2018) A German court sentenced Sergei V., suspected of committing an attack on the Borussia Dortmund football club bus in 2017, to 14 years in prison, the DPA news agency reported Tuesday.

In turn, Die Zeit reported that the man, who has dual Russian and German citizenship, was found guilty of 28 counts of attempted murder.

Sergei V. was detained on April 21, 2017, in connection with the bombing of the Borussia Dortmund team bus on April 11. That day, the team was on its way to the club's stadium for a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match with Monaco FC. The explosion only injured Dortmund player Marc Bartra and a police officer escorting the bus.

During the probe, the German prosecutors did not find a terrorist motive in the attack and handed the investigation over to the regional authorities. The suspect was believed to have organized the attack hoping to make profit from a drop in the football team's share price. The motive was evidenced by the fact that shortly before the incident, the man had bought stock options with a loan in order to short sell the football club's 15,000 shares.
