New Russian HIV Antiviral Drug to Hit Shelves by 2022 - Official

A new medicine for patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is expected to enter the market in about three years, the head of Russia's consumer protection agency told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th November, 2018) A new medicine for patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is expected to enter the market in about three years, the head of Russia's consumer protection agency told Sputnik.

"We hope that the drug will prove to be as efficient in clinical trials as it did in pre-clinical tests. But we are talking about 2-3 years before it can be marketed," Rospotrebnadzor chief Anna Popova said.

The medicine is being tested at the agency's epidemiologic research center. Popova said they wanted an antiviral drug that is cheaper, more effective and suitable for more HIV patients than the existing products.

The research center is simultaneously working on several gene therapy techniques to prevent and treat HIV infections by altering the genome. One of such drugs, Dinavir, has been tested in animals but it needs more clinical testing to make the leap to human trials.
