US Authorities Say Manafort Violated Plea Deal, Lied To Mueller's Team - Court Filing

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th November, 2018) US authorities in a court document accused former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort of lying to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team in violation of a plea bargain agreement and called for sentencing to begin immediately.

"After signing the plea agreement, Manafort committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters, which constitute breaches of the agreement," the document said on Monday. "As the defendant has breached the plea agreement, there is no reason to delay his sentencing herein."

The defense, according to the document, said Manafort believes he provided truthful information to Mueller's team and disagrees that the plea agreement had been violated. Manafort also asked the judge to set a court date for sentencing, the filing revealed.

Manafort reached a plea agreement with Mueller's team in September that stipulated cooperating with the FBI on the probe into Russia's role in the 2016 US presidential election. In exchange, prosecutors would ask judges to limit Manafort's prison sentence to no longer than 10 years.

Manafort was convicted on eight charges of tax evasion and bank fraud by a jury in the US state of Virginia in August. The former Trump aide also faced charges in a Washington, DC court that included acting as a foreign agent when he consulted for the Ukrainian government.
