Kazakh Foreign Minister, Mogherini Discuss Initiative on Russia-US-EU-China Talks - Astana

Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov discussed with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's initiative to hold in the country's capital of Astana a Russian-US-EU-Chinese meeting on international security issues, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

ASTANA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th November, 2018) Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov discussed with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's initiative to hold in the country's capital of Astana a Russian-US-EU-Chinese meeting on international security issues, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

On Friday, Abdrakhmanov and Mogherini held a meeting in Brussels on the sidelines of the EU-Central Asia Conference.

"During the meeting, they have also tackled the results of the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit, during which ... Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev presented a number of suggestions on pressing global problems solution. Back then, the head of the state voiced his initiative to hold a special UN session or a meeting of US, Russian, Chinese, and EU leaders in Astana in order to discuss international security challenges," the statement read.

According to the statement, Mogherini qualified Nazarbayev's suggestions as "quite well-timed for the global community." She also voiced the importance of their further implementation.

Later, Abdrakhmanov pointed out that the preliminary consultations showed that the idea of holding the negotiations on international security challenges was being supported by many countries.

"I can say that we will continue to purposefully work on implementation of this initiative. In order to do that we need ... the 'critical mass' of the international community's support ... That is why the head of the state spoke about a possibility to call a special UN session," Abdrakhmanov said.

The ASEM summit, uniting 51 European and Asian nations, was held on October 18-19 in Brussels.
