About 650,000 Public Sector Workers in Tunisia Go on Strike for Higher Wages - Reports

Approximately 650,000 people walked off their jobs in Tunisia demanding an increase in the salaries of public sector workers, local media reported Thursday.

TUNIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd November, 2018) Approximately 650,000 people walked off their jobs in Tunisia demanding an increase in the salaries of public sector workers, local media reported Thursday.

According to the Sky news Arabia tv channel, the strike has spread to schools, universities, hospitals and government ministries. The strike was sparked by the Tunisian government's announced intention to reduce disbursements for the country's public sector from 15.5 percent to 12.5 percent of the national GDP.

Earlier in the day, the Tunisian General Labor Union's secretary-general, Noureddine Taboubi, stated that the union might resort to other forms of protest, including a general strike.

Tunisia is still enduring the consequences of the 2011 crisis that was caused by the wave of protests over high unemployment rates, inflation, corruption, lack of political freedoms and poor living conditions. The current Tunisian authorities' inability to stabilize the situation has aggravated the nation's security situation and socioeconomic conditions.
