On Sunday, sources in the LNA told Sputnik that Haftar, a dominant figure in Libya's east, would not participate in the two-day conference on Libya.
According to the media outlet, Haftar will discuss security issues with the presidents of Egypt, Tunisia, Chad and Niger, as well as the Russian and Italian prime ministers.
In an interview with La Stampa newspaper, published on Monday, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte expressed hope that Haftar would partake in the conference in Italy's Palermo, where the LNA chief could try to find common ground with Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj, who leads the opposing UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord.
Libya has been in a state of political and economic turmoil since 2011, when a civil war broke out following the overthrow of its longtime leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
