As many as 11 militants of the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) surrendered to Afghan authorities during clearing operations in eastern Nangarhar province, local media reported on Saturday citing provincial governor's spokesperson.

A group of militants, including five women and four children, was led by two commanders, according to the Pajhwok news agency.

Other than Afghan nationals, the group also comprised Pakistanis, Chechens and Uzbeks, the agency reported.

Afghanistan has long been destabilized by the conflict between the Taliban movement and the Afghan government, exacerbated by the activities of various terrorist groups, including the IS.
