Cuba Shares Russia's Condemnation of US Unilateral Sanctions - President

Cuba supports Russia's opposition to the United States practicing unilateral imposition of sanctions on other countries, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Saturday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd November, 2018) Cuba supports Russia's opposition to the United States practicing unilateral imposition of sanctions on other countries, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Saturday.

Diaz-Canel is currently in Moscow on a three-day visit. On Friday, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian lawmakers. The Cuban leader's Saturday agenda includes meetings with Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

"I think both sides are satisfied with the current level of ties between Cuba and the patriarchate. We share common values. I would like to assure you that we will work to maintain and strengthen this relationship. Currently, Cuba joins Russia in condemning the unilateral sanctions that the United States imposes on Russia, Cuba and other countries," Diaz-Canel said at meeting with Patriarch Kirill.

Earlier in the week, the administration of US President Donald Trump said it was planning to tighten sanctions on Cuba after the United Nations urged Washington to end its decades-long economic embargo on Havana. When unveiling the sanctions, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said Cuba belonged to the "troika of tyranny," together with Venezuela and Nicaragua, due to political oppression and human rights violations allegedly practiced by the Cuban authorities.

Several rounds of restrictions have been imposed by Washington on Russia in the past several years over Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 US election and the Ukrainian crisis. Moscow has repeatedly denied Washington's allegations as groundless and blasted the United States for resorting to economic restrictions on other states to promote its own interests.
