Malaysian Police Arrest 5 People Suspected Of Links To Terror Organizations - Statement

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 31st October, 2018) The Malaysian police counter-terrorism department has arrested five persons suspected of involvement in terror activities, local media reported on Wednesday, citing a statement by Royal Malaysia Police Inspector-General Mohd Fuzi Harun.

According to the statement, two Malaysians, one Egyptian, one Pakistani and one middle Eastern man have been arrested in an operation that the police conducted from October 13 to October 26.

"The [Middle Eastern] suspect, aged 31, is unemployed and is involved in a case of threatening to kill a foreign diplomat in Kuala Lumpur," Fuzi's statement, quoted by the Channel news Asia media outlet, read.

The 50-year-old Egyptian man, a former member of the Islamic State terror organization (IS, banned in Russia) was arrested for "involvement in terror activities and use of fake travel documents," according to the statement.

A senior intelligence source told Channel News Asia that this arrest raised concerns of IS resurgence within the country.

While the 31-year-old Pakistani man is suspected of having links to the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group (banned in Russia), the Malaysian individuals, a man and a woman, are suspected of funding terror activities, namely, of giving money to Malaysian IS member Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi.

Wanndy, who was killed in Syria in 2017, is believed to have orchestrated the first IS terror attack in Malaysia in 2016. Back then, eight persons were injured as a hand grenade was lobbed into a night club in Malaysian Selangor state.
