Over 50% of US Citizens Not Confident Country's Elections Protected From Hacking - Poll

A total of 55 percent of the US citizens do not believe that election system in the United States is secure enough from hacking or any other cyberthreats, and almost 70 percent

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th October, 2018) A total of 55 percent of the US citizens do not believe that election system in the United States is secure enough from hacking or any other cyberthreats, and almost 70 percent of the US citizens think that a foreign state may try to meddle in the upcoming US midterm election, a poll carried out by the Pew Research Center revealed.

According to the results of the poll, published on Monday, only eight percent of the respondents have absolute confidence that the US election systems are protected from cyberthreats, and another 37 percent are "somewhat" confident about it. At the same time, 17 percent of the respondents said that they were "not at all" confident that the country's election systems were secure from cyberattacks.

While a total of 67 percent of the respondents said that they were "very" or "somewhat" confident that Russia or some other country would try to meddle in the US midterm election on November 6, only nine percent of the US citizens said that they did not believe at all that some country would attempt to influence the results of the election.

The poll was conducted among 10,683 respondents between September 24 and October 7.

In 2016, Washington accused Russia of meddling in the presidential election in order to influence the results of the vote in favor of then-Republican candidate Donald Trump. The United States claimed that Russian hackers allegedly targeted email accounts of the US Democratic Party. Russia has repeatedly refuted the allegations, arguing that they had never been substantiated. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the accusations groundless.

In September, President Donald Trump alleged that China was trying to meddle in the upcoming midterm election to influence the vote against the Republican Party. Beijing has denied the president's claims.
