Spanish Prime Minister Says Brazil to Face Great Challenges Under New President Bolsonaro

Brazil will face great challenges in the upcoming years under the leadership of newly-elected President Jair Bolsonaro, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday.

MADRID (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th October, 2018) Brazil will face great challenges in the upcoming years under the leadership of newly-elected President Jair Bolsonaro, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday.

Earlier on in the day, the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court said that Bolsonaro, who represents the right-wing Social Liberal Party, won the election with 55.13 percent of the vote with 99.99 percent of the ballots counted. The left-wing Workers' Party candidate, Fernando Haddad, came in second with 44.87 percent of the vote.

"The Brazilian people have determined their future for the upcoming years. The challenges will be enormous," Sanchez wrote on his Twitter page.

The prime minister added that Brazil could always count on Spain's support to "build a fairer and more equal Latin America."

Spanish Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function Meritxell Batet told the Cadena SER broadcaster that Madrid was interested in maintaining good relations with Brasilia. However, she did say that Bolsonaro's victory was "not the best news" for Spain.

Bolsonaro will take office on January 1, 2019 for a four-year term.
